Fingerprint Kit

Identifying an enemy spy is often the way to keep yourself and your country safe. One way to identify people is through their fingerprints. Every person has a unique fingerprint. Even twins don’t have the same fingerprints; they have a mirror image of each other’s prints.

Materials:

❏Colored chalk

❏Mortar or masher

❏Cornstarch

❏Clear tape

❏Magnifying glass

❏Make-up brush

❏Plastic container

❏Ink pad

Grind up the chalk and mix it with equal parts cornstarch (for example, one cup of chalk would be mixed with one cup of cornstarch). Store the powder in your plastic container. Now look for some fingerprints. You might find them on a drinking glass or silverware. Use the make-up brush to gently dust the powder on the surface of the glass or silverware. The dust will adhere to the oils in the fingerprint, rendering it visible. You can lift the print off of the glass with a piece of clear tape. Look at the fingerprint with the magnifying glass.

In order to know who was drinking from that glass, you will need to fingerprint your suspects. Ask the people you suspect to let you fingerprint them with the inkpad. Record their fingerprints on a piece of paper. Then use your magnifying glass to match the prints to see who was using that glass. Once you have practiced, you will be able to solve real mysteries, like which one of your sisters or brothers got into your chocolate stash. Or was it your sneaky Mom instead?
